August 2022: Solo Jazz Dance Primer

The partnered dances and community traditions that we practice at New Columbia Swing are filled with movements that come from vernacular jazz dance. We do jazz line dances such as the Shim Sham, the Tranky Doo, and the Big Apple in which we dance solo but with a big group. We dance as individuals, even when we are connected to a partner as in Lindy Hop and Charleston. And we can be free to dance solo, simply reveling in moving our bodies to jazz music. This class will introduce you to some fundamental jazz steps that you can use in every dance context and it will connect you to the history of jazz dance.
